Civil society movement obtains bullfighting ban in Catalonia

Resum:

As far back as 1909, Barcelona hosted Spain's first anti-bullfighting protest, and in 2004 more than 80 per cent of Catalans were opposed to the practice. The civil society Platform Prou (Stop!) formed by animal protection activists had presented the Initiative Legislative Popular that had received the important support of personnalities such as the Dalai Lama. Now the initiative has been adopted by the Catalan Parliament, a great achievement for a vibrant civil society.

Members of the Platform PROU, formed by animal protection activists who presented the ILP (Initiative Legislative Popular) to abolish bullfighting in Catalonia gave a press conference just after the positive result in the voting in the plenary meeting of the Catalan Parliament in Barcelona that amended the current animal protection legislation to ban bullfighting.

They also praised the process of the campaing that brought efficiently together the Catalan animal protection movement. It had mobilized more than 1000 activists and obtained more than 180,000 signatures for the petition to vote on this issue in Parliament– more than three times the required minimum of 50 000.
