Biodiversity week in Catalonia

Resum: 

Within the context of the International Year of Biodiversity proclaimed by the United Nations, from 21 to 30 May a series of events will take place in different parts of the Catalan territory. The aim is to raise awareness among catalan society of the importance to preserve biodiversity.

Biodiversity Week will take place between 21 and 30th May across Catalonia with activities linked to biodiversity, natural heritage and conservation. During 10 days, entities and institutions from all territory will show the importance of biodiversity and the need to preserve it by organising events.

The week will be launched with a Conference at La Pedrera, Gaudi’s famous building in Barcelona, on 21th May. On 22 May, International Day for Biological diversity, Parque de la Ciutadella will welcome another sent of activities Across the catalan territory hundreds of events will be organised such as: guided tours to discover the territory and its diversity, information talks, round tables, practical workshops, exhibitions, awards, volunteer activities, etc.

Biodiversity in Catalonia

Catalonia has a good biodiversity. Half the species present in Spain and a third of all the european species from major zoological groups are present in its territory. There are 94 habitats of EU’s interest that is 47% of those listed by the European Union. There are also 817 specific moss types (81% of the spanish and 48% of the European). 38% of birds and 47% of mammals present in Europe.
