The Ministry of the Environment and Housing of the Generalitat de Catalunya has designed a project of a decree that will create the Catalogue of fauna under threat in Catalonia. Its main objective is to protect and conserve the species of native fauna that are in danger of extinction in the future. The Project will be exhibited to the public from 12th April to 12th June and will be open to discussion.

The catalogue includes a total of 84 classified species with the legal category of endangered species and 175 which are considered to be vulnerable. All of these may become extinct if action is not taken to control the adverse factors that affect them.The catalogue also includes 13 species of vertebrate animals that have been declared extinct as reproducers in Catalonia (over recent decades) and which are the only species that may be the object of a reintroduction project.

Some examples of endangered species are the river crab, the sturgeon, the Montseny salamander, the Mediterranean tortoise, the bearded vulture, Bonelli's eagle, the black vulture, the wolf and the brown bear. The monk seal, the Pyrenees wild goat and the Iberian lynx have become extinct.
