As a response, the Banc dels Aliments (Food bank) started a project last year called: «Great food collection in Catalonia», which aims to increase the participation of all citizens. This initiative seeks the involvement of the population.

The foundation seeks 3,500 volunteers for 26 and 27 November. This year, in the province of Barcelona it will need about 3,500 volunteers, divided in major cities and regional capitals in several collection points (supermarkets), as well as about 300 volunteers at its headquarters for classification and storage of all food received during the weekend.

The objectives of the 2010 campaign are:

• 1 .- Collect food: The products to be collected will be rice, pasta, vegetables, milk, oil, cans, etc. The food collected will be transferred to different Bancs dels Aliments for distribution to nonprofit organizations that will reach those most in need, after registration and classification.
• 2 .- Awareness Raising: sensitize and mobilize the population of Catalonia on the current reality of poverty, while encouraging continued collaboration with Banc dels Aliments throughout the year.
