Spain cancels Haiti debt

Spain cancels Haiti debt

Resum:

Following the earthquake in Haiti, Catalan social organitzacions and 82 townships had requested the Government to cancel Haiti’s debt without conditions. The Govern has now decided the cancellation. A good new!

In January 2010 the total debt of Haiti was of 891 million dolars mainly with institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank and countries such as Taiwan or Venezuela. International civil society had called for the cancellation of the debt. Only the IMF has still to implement this cancellation.

When the earthquake took place Haiti’s external debt with the Spanish Government was 27,6 milions euros. The campaign Qui deu a Qui?, l'Observatori del Deute en la Globalització and more than 50 catalan and spanish NGOs had requested the cancellation of the debt. 82 townships had also approved decisons asking the Government to cancel the debt.

The Spanish Governnment has announced that the cancellation is now effective. It covers 38 milions dolars and 1,7 milions euros. No conditions are attached to this decision.
